Summary

Notes From Your Bookseller

An undeniably intelligent twist on the classic Jane EyreThe Wife Upstairs offers a fresh and feminist ride of a country-fried gothic。 Dogwalker Jane may find security with the widower Rochester, but she soon realizes she may be in for more than she bargained for。 Get ready for secrets, shocks and surprises: this one is a page-turner。

A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B。A。 Paris and Megan Miranda。

Meet Jane。 Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives。 The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients。 Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name。

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester。 Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident。 His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep。 Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for。

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand。 How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried。 In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs。 Rochester will get her happy ending?

YA author Hawkins (Her Royal Highness) makes her adult debut with this spirited reboot of Jane Eyre。 Shortly after starting to walk dogs in tony Thornfield Estates, a gated community in Birmingham, Ala。, the penniless young woman calling herself Jane meets dashing recent widower Eddie Rochester—whose wealthy wife, Bea Mason, went missing and was presumed drowned in a boating mishap, along with her BFF Blanche Ingraham, six months earlier。 Sparks fly, but plain Jane has a tough time living up to the legend of the glamorous Bea, who created the Southern Manors lifestyle brand。 Then Blanche’s body is found, and it’s clear from the massive skull fracture that her death was no accident。 As the police reopen their probe, an increasingly concerned Jane starts investigating Bea’s fate and what part, if any, Eddie played。 Hawkins shows real wit in outsider Jane’s sharp-eyed take on the entitled ladies of Thornfield Estates, but the mercenarily motivated characters will put off some readers。 Nonetheless, this suspenseful domestic thriller will keep readers turning the pages。 Agent: Holly Root, Root Literary。 (Jan。)

This is a thrilling new book that I couldn't put down。 The main characters in the book all have secrets that they're hiding from each other, and running from pasts that are trying to catch up with them。 Jane thinks becoming part of the rich and trendy crowd will ensure she's made it and Eddie is trying to get over the loss of his wife and thinks finding someone new will help。 There are some good twists that will keep you guessing。

But for Covid I would not have finished this。 Stereotypes, padded writing。 Many seem to really like this but I found it predictable and full of characters and a setting that are nothing but stereotypes。

Booknerd confession: I’ve never read anything by the Brontèe sisters。 A billion and one retelling of Austin’s Pride and Prejudice? Absolutely! But not one diddly dang dong thing by Charlotte, Emily or Anne。 I can only assume The Wife Upstairs follows the plot of Jane Eyre fairly closely with the only major adjustment being the fact that it is set in the present day。 I’m not going to bother with much effort in rehashing the plot since this was a modernization of a golden oldie。 Simply put, this i Booknerd confession: I’ve never read anything by the Brontèe sisters。 A billion and one retelling of Austin’s Pride and Prejudice? I'm adding this one to my favorites list!!! Such a great and exciting story! I made a realization about something a bit earlier than the author's reveal, but that was okay。 It was still thrilling。 。。。more

The bulk of the book was 3* but I'd round up to 3。5* for the ending。 An entertaining read, not much character development。 Plot development was smooth and mostly surface level。Eddie Rochester in a rich neighborhood who's wife B is missing assumed dead。 Blanche Ingraham was murdered。 Jane is a dog walker on the run from her past who falls for Eddie but starts to question if he killed his wife。 Also there are noises coming from upstairs。 The bulk of the book was 3* but I'd round up to 3。5* for the ending。 An entertaining read, not much character development。 Plot development was smooth and mostly surface level。Eddie Rochester in a rich neighborhood who's wife B is missing assumed dead。 Blanche Ingraham was murdered。 Jane is a dog walker on the run from her past who falls for Eddie but starts to question if he killed his wife。 Also there are noises coming from upstairs。 。。。more

I had seen this book everywhere on bookstagrams etc & was excited BOTM had an early release。 Overall, I found it to be just okay。 Despite the hype, it fell flat for me。 It’s cliche, unrealistic。 Can I see this getting the Hollywood treatment, sure! Is this one of the best thrillers or modern takes on Jane Eyre, no。

Is their bad outweighed by the "antagonists" bad? I did like that this story was a slow unraveling of everything that culminates in the ending。 However, I blazed through this book and didn't get that sense of dread that usually comes with tales like this。 I would give this book a 3。5 star, as many of the Gothic elements were missing but it was still a great time。 。。。more

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins is a Southern gothic twist on the classic Jane Eyre。 I really enjoyed the way Rachel Hawkins wrote the story, bouncing between each or the characters。 Speaking of the characters。 I hated all the players in The Wife Upstairs。 A bunch of unlikeable people who are all sneaky and slimy and deserve each other。 They fit well into the story and kept me turning the pages。 A very good read。

This was a solid domestic suspense。 The characters teetered on the edge of unbelievable but were enjoyable and I thought the different coupled relationships were well developed。 At times it reminded me of Liv Constantine (my favorite writing duo) and the nod to Jane Eyre was fun。 The last quarter of the book was my favorite, the waterfall of twists were well played and had me binging until the last page。 I would definitely recommend this one to other thriller lovers like myself。

I really wanted to like this book。。。and honestly, the story was a really intriguing take on Jane Eyre。 But the language。。。it seemed like every other word started with an F so the author could get to her word count。 I can deal with some profanity, but this was so obnoxious that it really detracted from the story。。。

First finished book of the year and I'm staying on brand with a thriller/mystery, and the Wife Upstairs is one of those that is actually well-written!
